FORTHCOMING Project Successfully Completed

The successful completion of the FORTHCOMING Project (FOsteRing THe City Of proximity through Maas INteGration) is proudly announced.

Funded by the DUT Partnership, FORTHCOMING was initiated to explore how successful 15-Minute City strategies implemented in urban centers can be adapted and transferred to suburban and lower-density areas.

Throughout the project, activities were carried out in collaboration with partners from across Europe, focusing on the following key areas:

• Multimodal mobility integration

• Digital solutions and data-driven approaches

• Urban space reallocation and mixed-use development

• Testing innovative strategies through Urban Living Labs

A wide range of analyses were conducted, stakeholder engagement activities were organized, and innovative approaches were evaluated to better understand how successful urban practices can be applied in suburban contexts. Through these efforts, contributions were made toward the development of more liveable, accessible, inclusive, and climate-neutral communities.

FORTHCOMING Final Event in Brussels

The project was officially concluded during the final event hosted by perspective.brussels in Brussels.

During the event, key findings and lessons learned from the project's six Urban Living Labs located in Madrid, Hamburg, Lisbon, Debrecen, Istanbul, and Turin were presented and discussed. Particular attention was given to how the 15-Minute City concept can be adapted to different urban and suburban contexts across Europe.

The event also featured valuable contributions from experts and practitioners working on proximity-based urban development, sustainable mobility, and citizen-focused planning approaches. Insights were shared on the City of Proximity in Brussels, experiences from the DUT-funded DREAMS project, and perspectives on the applicability of the 15-Minute City concept in different international contexts.

In addition, participants had the opportunity to explore the pedestrianisation transformation of Boulevard Anspach in the heart of Brussels through a guided technical visit, providing practical insights into the implementation of people-centered urban space interventions.

Looking Ahead

The completion of FORTHCOMING marks an important milestone in advancing knowledge and practical experience related to proximity-based urban development and sustainable mobility planning.

A sincere thank you is extended to all consortium partners, project coordinators, stakeholders, Urban Living Lab participants, and contributors whose expertise, commitment, and collaboration made the project possible.

The knowledge generated, methodologies developed, and partnerships established throughout FORTHCOMING are expected to continue supporting the transition toward more sustainable, accessible, and people-centered urban futures.

As a final project output, a Guidebook on Implementing the 15-Minute City in Suburban Areas will soon be published. The guidebook will bring together lessons learned throughout the project, replicability insights, and practical recommendations for adapting the proximity city model to different local contexts.
